When you have completed Unit 6, you should be able to achieve the following learning objectives.
- Describe the history of treaty making in Canada, particularly with reference to The Royal Proclamation and to problems related to treaties and the fulfilment of treaty obligations.
- Discuss the importance of treaties today, and their implications for negotiations regarding governance issues.
- Identify the variety of perspectives regarding whether or not treaty making continues to be a viable and/or desirable route to realizing self-government.
- Outline the federal land claim negotiation process, including its relationship to treaties and treaty making, as well as the various perspectives of the effectiveness of the land claim process.
- Consider possible future directions for treaty making and land claims in Canada.
