Learning Objectives

When you have completed Unit 6, you should be able to achieve the following learning objectives.

  1. Describe the history of treaty making in Canada, particularly with reference to The Royal Proclamation and to problems related to treaties and the fulfilment of treaty obligations.
  2. Discuss the importance of treaties today, and their implications for negotiations regarding governance issues.
  3. Identify the variety of perspectives regarding whether or not treaty making continues to be a viable and/or desirable route to realizing self-government.
  4. Outline the federal land claim negotiation process, including its relationship to treaties and treaty making, as well as the various perspectives of the effectiveness of the land claim process.
  5. Consider possible future directions for treaty making and land claims in Canada.
