Overview
In this unit, we continue our consideration of special dietary needs experienced by people at various stages of the life cycle, with an overview of the nutrition appropriate for children, adolescents, and older adults.
Objectives
After completing this unit, you should be able to
- discuss the special nutritional concerns in children, specifically energy and iron.
- discuss the prevalence, probable causes, and health risks of childhood obesity.
- discuss some of the special nutritional concerns of adolescents, specifically energy, iron, and calcium, and the nutritional challenges of eating away from home.
- discuss the physiological changes of aging that can affect nutritional status.
- discuss the special nutritional needs of older adults, specifically energy, protein, fibre, fat, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, and iron.
- discuss nutrition-related conditions of older adults.
