Your grade in Nutrition 331 will be based on one major assignment and two examinations.
You should start the assignment after Unit 3. It will help you with the mid-term examination. We encourage you to submit the assignment at least four weeks prior to writing the final exam. The assignment and tutor comments will be helpful for writing the final exam. Expect the assignment to take 15 or more hours. We encourage you to work on the assignment weekly.
The assignment requires that you evaluate in detail the nutritional adequacy of your diet (see the Assignment Booklet). You have the option of calculating total nutrient intakes manually or using the computer program provided—we encourage you to use the computer program. Should you have difficulty understanding what you need to do, call your tutor. You may provide your answers on separate pages and mail them with the completed forms and the computer print-outs or manual tabulation sheets to your tutor, who will evaluate the assignment for accuracy and completeness. Remember that your answers must be word processed on standard sized paper. Please submit all parts of your assignment together. Marks will be deducted for poor presentation. When you submit your assignment, be sure to attach a Tutor-Marked Exercise form.
The assignment will be mailed back to you with a grade indicating the number of points you scored and will include the tutor’s comments. We urge you to keep a copy of your work in case the original gets lost in the mail.
You must write a mid-term examination covering the material in Units 1–8 when you have completed Unit 8 of the Study Guide. You will write a final examination covering the entire course when you have completed the course. The mid-term and final examinations contain a combination of multiple-choice, true/false, definition, and short-answer questions. Please consult the appropriate section in the Student Manual for information about requesting an examination and about examination regulations.
Both examinations are closed book. You may not consult any books, notes, or other written or printed materials during exams; however, you may use a pocket calculator. You will have two hours to complete the mid-term examination and three hours for the final.
While you are not obliged to request permission from your tutor to write an examination, you are encouraged to consult with him or her about your readiness to write and about examination writing strategies.
There is no minimum required passing grade for the mid-term. Students who are dissatisfied with their grade on any examination, or who obtain less than the required passing grade may write a supplemental exam. The higher of the two grades will be recorded as the official grade. There is a fee for supplemental examination services. Only one supplemental is permitted per examination.
