Your grade in Nutrition 330 will be based on one major assignment and two examinations.

Assignment

You should start the assignment outlined in your Assignment Booklet after Unit 3. It will help you with the midterm examination. It should be sent to your tutor immediately after you have completed Unit 9. The assignment requires that you evaluate in detail the nutritional adequacy of your diet. You have the option of calculating total nutrient intakes manually or using the computer program provided—we strongly encourage you to use the computer program. Should you have difficulty understanding what you need to do, call your tutor.

Provide your answers on separate pages, and mail them with the completed forms and the computer print-outs or manual tabulation sheets to your tutor, who will evaluate the assignment for accuracy and completeness. Remember that your answers must be typed. Please submit all parts of your assignment together. Marks will be deducted for poor presentation.

The assignment will be mailed back to you with your mark and the tutor’s comments.

Note: As you must submit your assignment by postal mail, it is very important that you keep a copy of your work, at least a rough draft, in case the original is misdirected. Make certain that you include a Tutor-Marked Exercise form from the course package (an electronic TME can be accessed via myAU).

The passing grade for the assignment is 60%. If you do not achieve a pass on your first attempt, you may re-submit your assignment, with permission from your tutor.

Examinations

You must write a midterm examination covering all the material in Units 1-7 when you have completed Unit 7. You will write a final examination covering the entire course when you have completed the course. The midterm and final examinations may contain any combination of multiple-choice, short-answer, true/false and explain, matching definition, and diet-analysis questions. Please see the section of this manual titled “Procedures for Applying for and Writing Examinations” for further information.

Note: You may not consult any books, notes, or other written or printed materials during either examination; however, you may use a pocket calculator. You will have two hours in which to complete the midterm examination and three hours for the final.

Obtaining Credit for Nutrition 330

There is no minimum required passing grade for the midterm examination. However, if the grade you achieve is less than 55%, you may write a supplemental examination. You will then be credited with the higher of the two grades. The passing grade for the final examination is 55%. If you do not attain a passing grade at the first attempt, you must write a supplemental examination. There is a fee for supplemental examination services.

To receive credit for Nutrition 330, you must

  • submit the assignment and obtain a mark of at least 60%.
  • obtain at least 55% on the final examination.
  • obtain an overall course mark of at least 60%.
