Unit 9
Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an extension of geometry, but develops more sophisticated measurement and calculation skills. It is applied in everything from designing golf balls to setting up satellite dishes.

Objectives

After completing this unit, you should be able to

  1. solve problems using Pythagoras’ theorem.
  2. use the trigonometric ratios—sine, cosine and tangent—to calculate unknown quantities in figures such as triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons and circles.
  3. convert degrees to radians and radians to degrees.
  4. convert degrees expressed as decimals into degrees, minutes and seconds.
