Unit 6
Progressions and Logarithms

In this unit, we discuss progressions and logarithms. A progression is a sequence of numbers structured according to a constant mathematical relationship.

A logarithm is a particular type of exponent, one that simplifies the calculation of many complex problems. An exponent is a mathematical expression that represents a number as a base raised to a power.

Objectives

After completing this unit, you should be able to

  1. describe the properties of an arithmetic progression, compute the nth term and the sum of n terms of such a progression, and calculate arithmetic means.
  2. describe the properties of a geometric progression, compute the nth term and the sum of n terms of such a progression, and calculate geometric means.
  3. perform basic operations on logarithmic expressions.
