Part Two: Course Completion
Course Objectives
The principal objective of this course is to provide students the opportunity
further to develop and demonstrate their capacity for independent study.
Self-directed learning, time management, and skills enhancement in research
and organization are all required for the successful completion of this
course.
At the beginning of the course contract you may find it useful to write
a brief list of learning objectives for your work in this course, and
then to review and revise it from time to time. Doing so will provide
a measure of the evolution of your thinking about the course content,
the pedagogy of independent study, and track variations in your degree
of commitment as well as your satisfaction with this mode of learning
over the contract period.
Students are encouraged to share some of their thoughts about their
topic, and their experience of independent study on the course web page.
Rationale for the Adoption of Learning Outcomes Tied to Evaluation
-
Students perform best when the expectations for learning are clearly
stated
-
Transparency in information about learning outcomes, coursework and
evaluation is required for students to make informed decisions about
their coursework, progress and likelihood of success.
-
The number of learning outcomes is limited to learning which involves
a concrete deliverable.
-
Learning outcomes are measurable.
-
In each course learning outcomes are presented in the chronological
order in which they are to be achieved.
-
The commitment to transparency and equity produces coursework that
is open to examination by prospective students, other academics, funding
sources and the interested public.
- Learning Outcomes tied to Evaluation demonstrates accountability for
students, instructors and the university.
Learning Outcomes
The following learning outcomes must be achieved to obtain credit:
-
Identify an appropriate subject for independent study and appropriate
resource materials for study.
-
Write a proposal for an independent study project.
-
Produce a research instrument, including the rationale for the
selection of a particular research methodology.
-
Provide a supporting bibliography and abstract for the project.
-
Present a written progress report that includes the research
instrument, research methodology, supporting bibliography and abstract.
-
Draw conclusions based on findings.
-
Make suggestions for further study or improved results in the future.
-
Draw conclusions from experience than can lead to social transformation.
- Have ability to plan, organize and facilitate.
