Part One: Course Pamphlet
Evaluation
Students will engage in a critical analysis of their topic by means of
the development of a finalized research proposal, a literature review,
and a paper that refines, builds on and synthesizes the previous two assignments.
Students' work will be evaluated cumulatively based on the completion
of three assignments.
- Finalized Project Proposal 20%
The student will be required to finalize their preliminary project proposal,
and submit it to the project supervisor for grading. The proposal must
identify a problem or issue to be addressed, and provide a justification
for undertaking the project. The proposal will provide a brief overview
of the materials to be used, information to be gathered, methodology,
and a timetable for completing the various phases. The proposal will
make clear if the project is to be designed for a specific audience
or is designed with a view to interesting a prospective audience in
the project once completed. If costs are associated with the project,
how these costs will be covered to make the project design possible
are to be addressed. A tentative list of resources, annotated to indicate
their relevance to the project is to be submitted as part of the proposal.
Students are also required to anticipate any difficulties or barriers
that may impede the successful completion of the project as initially
envisaged. Approximately 4-6 pages.
- Progress Report 30%
The student must complete a progress report review once half to two-thirds
of the work in the course has been completed. It may present the results
of the research in a preliminary form or describe the steps that have
been taken to demonstrate that the project can be completed as planned.
Where modifications have been made to the scope or schedule for completion,
these factors are to be reported and explained. The progress report
may also take the form of a rough draft of the final report, or a significant
part of it. Approximately 10-12 pages.
- Project Report 50%
The project report will integrate the original and revised research
proposal's identification of a problem, issue, or choice related to
the topic, and incorporate the literature review in addition to any
original research that the student has undertaken. The research paper
will result in a final product that is the student's own critical analysis
of the current trends and outcomes related to the particular problem,
issue or choice selected. The final assignment should be approximately
20-25 pages in length.
The timelines for completion of these assignments will be arranged between
the project supervisor and the student as part of the Learning Contract.
