Part One: Course Pamphlet
Course Description
Directed Readings I: Topics in the Human Services is an independent
study course. It involves student-initiated units of study that are
based on a contract study arrangement worked out between an individual
student, an approved projects' supervisor and Athabasca University (via
the Program Coordinator). Topics must be chosen in consultation with the
program coordinator, and can be adapted to local, comparative or international
contexts. Such research and analysis is meant to facilitate a critical
analysis of various trends currently having an impact on the Human Services
sector in Canada and elsewhere.
The primary purpose of this course is to enable students to undertake
independent study and research, as well as identify and assess a problem,
issue or choice as it relates to the Human Services sector. Because this
research intends to build on previous learning, students registering in
Directed Readings I: Topics in the Human Services must have completed
Human Services 311 and 322 or equivalent courses from another institution.
