The Role of the Directed Readings Supervisor
The directed readings supervisor acts as a representative of Athabasca
University and may or may not be a full-time employee of the University.
When the directed readings supervisor is not a full-time employee
of the University, he or she is paid an honorarium. A directed readings
supervisor normally has a masters degree or doctorate in the area
in which the student wishes to study. The role of the project supervisor
is to:
- Assist the student in preparing a learning contract that has
clear and attainable objectives,
- Assist in identifying materials (e.g., books, tapes, periodicals,
equipment, etc.) that will help the student meet the obligations
agreed to in the contract,
- Provide both verbal and written information to the student,
and
- Evaluate the research using the objectives and evaluation scheme
agreed upon in the learning contract, and assign a final percentage
grade.
