Unit 3
Mind-Body Interventions

In this unit we explore several forms of mind-body interventions, especially biofeedback. Biofeedback is the provision of information about the physiological processes of an individual so that the person can make conscious changes in the processes being monitored. It can be instrumental (using devices that monitor physiological processes) or non-instrumental (using bodily sensations). Meditation and guided imagery are also discussed.

Objectives

When you have completed this unit, you should be able to

  1. define “biofeedback,” and discuss the nature of biofeedback and other forms of mind-body interventions.
  2. identify situations in which biofeedback and other forms of mind-body interventions are commonly used.
  3. determine the effectiveness of biofeedback and other forms of mind-body interventions by analysing available research.
  4. identify trends and issues related to the use of biofeedback and other forms of mind-body interventions.
