Alcohol, like tobacco, is a widely consumed, psychoactive agent that has profoundly important health effects. This unit examines the effects of alcohol on the body and the problem of alcoholism.
Objectives
After completing this unit, you should be able to
- describe briefly the key features of wine, beer, and liquor.
- outline the physiological and behavioural effects of alcohol, including blood alcohol concentration, absorption, and metabolism, and describe the immediate and the long-term effects of (excessive) alcohol consumption.
- describe the symptoms and underlying causes of alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, and alcoholism.
- discuss how alcohol interacts with other common drugs.
- discuss the effects of alcohol-related problems on society and family.
- outline methods used in treating alcoholism, and explain whether or not alcoholism can be cured.
- discuss laws, policies, and public attitudes regarding the use and abuse of alcohol.
- discuss ethnicity and gender differences with respect to alcohol use and abuse.
