Reproductive Choices and Pregnancy
This unit addresses choices related to human reproduction. It begins with a discussion of contraception and then considers the controversial subject of abortion. Next, it examines the process of pregnancy and the related issues of prenatal care and common problems experienced during pregnancy. The unit continues with a look at childbirth, including caesarean delivery, and concludes with a discussion of infertility.
Objectives
After completing this unit, you should be able to
- describe the different methods of contraception available in Canada, and evaluate their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
- describe the methods used to terminate a pregnancy (abortion), and outline the controversies associated with abortion in Canada.
- identify the key issues to consider when planning a pregnancy.
- explain the importance of prenatal care, and describe the physical and emotional aspects of pregnancy.
- describe the stages of childbirth, childbirth methods, and the complications that can arise during labour and delivery.
- describe some of the primary causes of and possible solutions to infertility in Canadian.
