Health and Wellness

Welcome to Health Studies 200: Introduction to Human Health (I). This course is designed to provide you with general information on health and wellness issues in Canada. It begins with an examination of some background material. First, we consider the basic concepts of health and wellness. Next, we look at the major health problems that affect our society, so that we can identify where to direct our health care efforts. Finally, we examine the models and theories that explain health behaviour change.

Objectives

After completing this unit, you should be able to

  1. define health and identify the factors that determine health.
  2. discuss the broad overview of health concerns that have occurred throughout Canadian history.
  3. identify and describe the similarities and differences between the concepts of health and wellness.
  4. describe the major causes of sickness and death in Canada.
  5. evaluate the role of gender and ethnicity on basic physiological differences, health status, health research, and health training.
  6. explain how predisposing factors, contextual factors, beliefs, and attitudes affect a person’s risk behaviour for health problems.
  7. examine how behaviour change can occur.
