Unit 4
Nutrition

Short Answer

Discuss how foods are categorized into the four distinct food groups in Canada’s Food Guide.

Foods are classified into the four food groups based on whether they originate from the same agricultural base, how foods have been traditionally classified, and how people use foods (e.g., legumes were placed in Meat and Alternatives because people often substitute them for meat). To a much lesser extent, foods with similar content are classified together, however, the nutrient content of foods within a food group vary greatly.
