Unit 5
Heritage in the Regions:
Provinces and Territories
Provincial governments have traditionally been active in the heritage sector, developing strong legislation, policies, and programs. Nearly all provincial governments have cultural property legislation intended to preserve heritage. Thus, although the federal government makes policy that shapes heritage activity nationally, to date in Canada actual heritage preservation has been driven largely by provincial statutes and regulations.
