| A simple sentence has a noun or pronoun as subject and a verb or a verb plus other parts of speech as the predicate. The predicate is often a noun or pronoun that is the target of the verb. This target is called a direct object. It is represented by the accusative case in German and answers the question whom (wen)? or what (was)? The masculine forms of both the definite article (der) and the indefinite article (ein) change when the nouns they precede are direct objects of the verb. |
|
| Beispiele: | Der Pullover ist schön. Ich kaufe den Pullover. |
| Ein Pullover ist teuer. Ich brauche einen Pullover. | |
| The neuter and feminine forms of the definite article (das, die) and of the indefinite article (ein, eine) do not change when they precede a direct object. | |
| Beispiele: | Das Sweatshirt ist schön. Ich kaufe das Sweatshirt. |
| Ein Sweatshirt ist teuer. Ich brauche ein Sweatshirt. | |
| Die Jacke ist schön. Ich kaufe die Jacke. | |
| Eine Jacke ist teuer. Ich brauche eine Jacke. | |
| The plural form of the definite article (die) does not change in the accusative. | |
| Beispiele: | Die Schuhe sind schön. Ich kaufe die Schuhe. |
| The accusative question words are wen for people and was for things. | |
| Beispiele: | Stephanie trifft Peter. Wen trifft sie? Peter. |
| Stephanie kennt den Studenten. Wen kennt sie? Den Studenten. | |
| Wir trinken den Wein. Was trinken wir? Den Wein. | |
| Note, not every sentence has a direct object. | |
| Beispiele: | Wir fahren morgen in die Stadt. Mein Bruder lacht fast nie. |
| Complete the following sentences with the appropriate accusative form of the noun or pronoun in parentheses. The cued words are given in the nominative. | |
| Beispiel: | (der Schuh) Ich brauche Schuh. |
| Ich brauche den Schuh. | |
