German 202: Introductory German I will help you develop the necessary skills to acquire a basic knowledge of the German language and be able to communicate in German by the end of this course. The Wie geht’s? textbook and the accompanying CD, the workbook/lab manual, lab program, and video component are all designed to achieve the following objectives in the four active and passive language skills.

  1. Writing: You will learn how to express yourself in short texts and letters using simple German sentences.
  2. Reading: After studying the Wie geht’s? texts and learning the necessary vocabulary, you will be able to understand articles, short stories, advertising texts and menus at a similar level of difficulty.
  3. Speaking: You will be able to communicate in German using simple sentences modelled on the dialogues and lab exercises. You will also have a command of the sounds of German through the pronunciation exercises in the workbook and the completion of oral assignments with your tutor.
  4. Listening Comprehension: You will be able to understand the German of everyday situations spoken at moderate speed. The lab program and pronunciation sections of the lab manual will enhance your listening skills.

Additionally, the course will provide a good foundation in a number of basic grammatical structures and concepts, as well as developing vocabulary and cultural awareness of the German-speaking countries.
