To enable you to type German characters on your standard English-language keyboard, follow the directions below.
On a PC, click on the Windows Start button, then click on Control Panel. Find the icon (usually a globe) for Regional and Language Options, Language, or Keyboard. Follow the prompts to install a new language and install German. The ä is usually the quotation mark key, the ü is the left bracket, the ö the colon, and ß is the dash key. The z and y change places. To activate and deactivate the keys (to switch between German and English), press the ALT and Shift key at the same time.
For a Mac, open System Preferences, click on International, then on Input Menu. Scroll down to German, click on the checkbox and close the window. A flag will appear at the top right corner of your screen. Click on it, then choose German from the drop-down menu.
