Unit 10
Resource Development and
International Trade

Overview

In the first nine units, we studied the energy, mineral, soil, and water resources of the Earth. We examined the origin, extraction, processing, and use of the various substances that make up these resources. In this final unit of Geology 313, our concern will be with the global distribution of these resources, their role in international trade, their control by governments and other organizations, and their place in international politics. We will also attempt to predict new areas for resource exploration and consider prospects for new and more efficient use and management of resources.

Objectives

After completing this unit, you should be able to

  1. describe the irregular distribution of world resources and the resulting trade in mineral commodities.
  2. discuss the role of corporations, governments, and international cartels and syndicates in producing and controlling resources.
  3. discuss the history and influence of OPEC in the international oil trade.
  4. describe the future prospects of world energy and mineral supply.
  5. describe Canada’s mineral policy, and relate the options to the development of resources.
