Case Study: Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Red Hill Creek Expressway

In this unit, we review the long and convoluted experience of citizens in Hamilton, Ontario, who were concerned about the potential impacts of a proposed expressway project. This case study illustrates practical experience with a variety of EA processes.

Objectives

1. describe the public experience in confronting the proposed construction of an expressway in the east end of the City of Hamilton.
2. evaluate the effectiveness of various environmental assessment procedures in addressing a major expressway project in Ontario.
3. explain the value of environmental assessment theory, and discuss the practical aspects of its implementation.
