This course takes a practical approach to essay writing by having students apply the major principles of composition in five essay assignments. Students learn these principles in the abstract by studying handbooks on composition and in practice by studying samples of good writing and applying the principles in their own work. The course emphasizes some common essay types— exposition, comparison and contrast, persuasion and research. Students will also write a contemplative essay, which is less formal in content and structure than the other essays in the course. Furthermore, students will write a research proposal to receive preliminary feedback on the research essay, the assignment with the highest grade weight and, arguably, the most complex.
