Supplementary Reading

To develop your research skills, explore the topics on the World Wide Web that relate to the readings for Unit 1.

Many art sites on the Web contain analyses of periods, movements, artists, and art pieces. For Unit 1, search the Web for information on modern art movements and for colour reproductions of some of the art mentioned by Robert Hughes.

Begin with a general essay devoted to modern art. Then search for relevant artists by name (Cézanne, Picasso, Braque, Gris, Léger, Délaunay, Boccioni, Severini, Balla, Picaba), and search for movements (cubism, futurism).

For example, begin a search for Picasso using Yahoo! Use this search engine to search for other artists and movements. Some sites, such as Marcel Duchamp on the World Wide Web, will link to a variety of Web sites related to this artist and to other relevant artists. Be sure to keep track of the pages you explore.
