Diagnostic Assignment

Your first assignment, which is worth 10% of your final grade, requires you to prepare a short-essay (approximately 750 words) response to the following topic:

  • In “Where Are the Stories of My People?”(see ENGL 308 Book of Readings), Mary Panegoosho shows the importance of storytelling in relation to culture. Compare the “hunter’s” experience with your own experience with storytelling. (For background, you may want to refer to the readings by N. Scott Momaday and Thomas King that are presented in Unit 1.)

This essay should be submitted to your tutor for marking after you have completed Unit 1 (by the end of your first month in the course). The purpose of this assignment is to identify any problems you may have with reading or writing skills and to quickly remedy them. Refer to the “Sample Essays” and “Essay Writing” sections of the Student Manual for further directions on preparing and submitting your written assignments. Contact your tutor if you have further questions or concerns.
