Welcome to English 308: Native Literature in Canada. This three-credit, senior-level university course provides a survey of Native literature in Canada written in English. Beginning with the oral tradition and leading to contemporary Native literature from across Canada, the course examines how oral tradition has developed into and influenced a written tradition among Aboriginal people. The course is designed to provide you with the basis for a deeper exploration of the literature of Aboriginal cultures.

The course is divided into ten units, each of which is organized according to a particular genre. The first four units examine oral tradition and demonstrate how oral storytelling influenced the development of contemporary Native Canadian literature in Canada. The last six units examine various forms of the written tradition.
