We have designed English 305: Literature for Children to introduce you to children's literature, its authors, works, forms, history, themes, and concerns. During your studies in this course we hope you will achieve the following broad objectives:

  1. read, understand, and enjoy several significant literary works for children
  2. achieve a general overview of children's literature and acquire an historical perspective on its development
  3. develop an appreciation of the techniques of artistry in language
  4. develop an appreciation of each work as an individual work with its own formal integrity
  5. recognize some of the more common weaknesses of children's books and the reasons for these weaknesses
  6. develop standards by which to evaluate children's books and picture-book illustrations
  7. build critical judgment in selecting books of literary merit for children
  8. improve the critical tools and communication skills acquired in your introductory (junior) literature course
  9. increase your interest in, and ability to read, literature
  10. increase your knowledge and understanding of yourself and others through your experience with children's literature
