Final Examination

Education 404 also requires that you write an invigilated, closed-book, final examination. You will have a maximum of three (3) hours to write the exam. No notes, textbooks, or hand-held computers are allowed in the examination room. The final exam, which is worth 40% of your final grade and covers the material presented in Units 1 through 8, is scheduled at the end of Unit 8. For more information on invigilation or exam supervision, consult the current Athabasca University Calendar.

The final exam asks you to prepare short-essay (2 to 3 pages) answers to five (5) out of 8 questions. The questions are similar to those that appear in the “Study Questions” at the end of each unit. Before taking this exam, ensure that you have completed and received tutor feedback on all other written assignments.

Although you do not need your tutor’s permission to write the final examination, you are strongly advised to consult with him or her about your readiness to take the exam and about exam-writing strategies. When you feel you are ready, refer to the current version of the Athabasca University Calendar for procedures to follow when requesting an examination. Allow at least 15 business days from the time you request your exam (longer if you mailed your request form) to the date on which you wish to take the exam.

If you are not satisfied with the grade you receive on an exam, or if you receive a grade below D (50%), discuss the situation with your tutor. You may be urged to re-examine the course material, pay a fee, and then write a supplemental examination. Should you write a supplemental exam, your official score will be the higher of the two grades you receive. If you wish to appeal your final examination grade, contact Examination Services, Office of the Registrar for information on how to proceed. Allow a minimum of four (4) weeks for your exam results to be processed and your final grade mailed to you.
