Unit 10
The Offensive Side of Television
If television supports community, promotes shared values, and contributes to public education, what function is served by those elements that offend us? What is offensive on TV, and who says so? Has the definition of “offensive” changed over time? Does violent or biased material have a measurable effect on viewers, and if so, what can we and should we do about it? These questions and others are addressed in Unit 10.
Objectives
After completing this unit, you should be able to
- identify the various aspects of television that cause controversy and offend elements of the public.
- discuss the studies that have been conducted to determine the possible effects of offensive (violent, sexual, racist, sexist) material on viewers and on society.
- distinguish between possible positive and possible negative effects of television content.
- analyse why some ideas or points of view are more dominant on television than others.
