Part V
Producing

Part V explores the different forms of private media production available to children today, from writing to making videos to producing hypertexts and e-zines. In increasing your awareness of the issues of institutional production, the following unit will help you to understand how commercial interests are interwoven into the production of materials of all kinds for children and young people.

Unit 10
Producing

This unit addresses a small number of the many questions of how children learn by reception and how they learn by production, in an era when production possibilities are expanding for everyone. It explores some examples of children producing texts of their own and looks at some of the broader questions involved in texts such as MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons), where participants are simultaneously producers and recipients of materials.

Learning Objectives

When you have completed Unit 10, you should be able to achieve the following learning objectives.

  1. Understand the importance of opportunities for production in the development of a child’s understanding of media.
  2. Assess your own preferred styles of writing, and be aware of some of the complex questions concerning the use of different media.
