Students who approach their studies in a systematic and organized manner are more likely to complete the course successfully than are those who do not plan a course of action for themselves. We strongly recommend, therefore, that you follow a study schedule to assist you in budgeting your time.

We have designed the following schedule to help you organize your activities and complete the course in 17 weeks or approximately four months. You may choose to proceed more rapidly or somewhat more slowly than this schedule suggests: your contract allows you six months to complete the course. If you find, however, that you cannot complete it within this time, consult the current Athabasca University Calendar for information on obtaining an extension to your course contract.

Be sure to call your tutor if you are having any difficulty with the material in the course.

Week 1: Read through the entire Student Manual carefully. Review Sayre, Writing About Art, Introduction, pp. 1–14; Chapter 2, pp. 33–65; Chapter 3, pp. 66–87. Study Lessons 1 and 2. View the optional video, The High Renaissance.
Note: If you did not take Athabasca University’s Art History 201/History 203, or if it has been over a year since you did so, it is important that you begin Art History 202/History 204 by studying the “Primer of Art History” and “Introduction” to Janson’s History of Art (pp. 16–31). Similarly, if you took Art History 201/History 203 in the earlier version that did not include the Early Renaissance in Italy, it is important that you study this period before studying Lesson 1 of Art History 202/History 204. See Janson’s History of Art, pp. 408–451, and Practice Tests, Vol. II, pp. 1–6.
Weeks 2–3: Study Lessons 3 and 4.
Week 4: Study Lessons 5 and 6. View the optional video, Realms of Light: The Baroque.
Week 5: Re-read the section of the Student Manual entitled “Tips on Writing Essays.” Review Chapters 1 and 4 of Henry Sayre’s booklet, Writing About Art. Prepare and submit your first assignment. Remember to enclose a tutor-marked exercise form and indicate that this is assignment 1.
Weeks 6–7: Request the mid-term exam. Study Lesson 7. Review Lessons 1–7.
Weeks 8–9: Study Lesson 8. In preparation for the mid-term exam, review Lessons 1–8 and your tutor’s comments on your assignment. Re-read the sections of the Student Manual on writing exams. Study for and write the mid-term exam.
Week 10: Study Lesson 9. View the optional video, An Age of Reason, An Age of Passion.
Weeks 11–12: Study Lessons 10 and 11. View the optional video, A Fresh View: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
Weeks 13–14: Study Lessons 12, 13, and 14. View the optional video, Into the Twentieth Century.
Weeks 15–16: Request the final exam. Study Lesson 15. View the optional video, In Our Time. Review your tutor’s comments on your first assignment and, if necessary, re-read the sections of the Student Manual on writing essays, as well as Henry Sayre’s booklet, Writing About Art. Prepare and submit your second assignment as outlined in the Student Manual. Remember to include a tutor-marked exercise form and indicate that this is assignment 2.
Week 17: In preparation for the final exam, review Lessons 9 through 15. Review your tutor’s comments on both assignments and re-read the section of the Student Manual on writing exams. Study for and write the final exam.

Congratulations on completing the course!
