Essay Assignments 1, 2, and 3 (30% each)

These three written assignments are worth 90% of your final grade. The first essay should be submitted after you have completed Unit 5; the second essay should be submitted after you have completed Unit 8; and the third essay should be submitted after you have completed Unit 10.

Each essay assignment requires you to write a 2,000 to 2,500-word essay (approximately 8 to 10, typed/word processed, double-spaced pages) on a particular aspect of language and culture covered in this course. Suggestions for selected topics for each essay assignment will be provided. Ensure that you allow yourself enough time to complete each written assignment—select your first essay topic as soon after Telephone Quiz 1 as possible.

In addition to consulting the course materials, that is, the content contained in your textbooks and Study Guide, your essay must show evidence of research beyond these materials. (See the “References” and “Supplementary Materials List” provided at the end of each unit or section.) You can access research material via Internet searches, by contacting the Athabasca University Library, or by visiting your local public library. Your best course of action would be to contact the Athabasca University Library first.

Be sure to consult with your tutor about the suitability of your selected topic and research strategies before you begin researching and writing. Your tutor will advise you on the adequacy of your information and may suggest other resources for you to investigate.
