When you are ready to write your exam, you must complete and submit an Exam Request, along with the applicable fees.

If you are preparing to write an exam at an AU-approved invigilation centre within Canada or the United States, the Examination Request must be received by AU a minimum of twenty (20) days before the requested write date.

If you will be writing your exam at an AU-approved invigilation centre outside Canada or the United States, your request must be received a minimum of thirty (30) days before the requested write date.

If you have submitted an invigilator for AU approval, your request must be received a minimum of sixty (60) days before the requested write date.

More information: Requesting an exam.

Late Exam Requests

Exam requests received outside the deadlines above will be accepted and processed as a Late Exam request (with the exception of supplemental exams). The late request must be made before the student's course contract end date, and the exam must be written within 30 days after the end date. A fee will be charged for this service.

More information: Late exam requests.

Students can write their examinations at Athabasca University locations in Athabasca, Edmonton, or Calgary, Alberta. In addition, a Canada-wide Examination Invigilation Network has been established that is composed of many post-secondary institutions that are AU-approved invigilation centres.

Students living within 100 km of an established AU-approved invigilation centre are required to write their exam at that location.

Students living further than 100 km from an approved invigilation centre have the following options:

For more information on where to write your exam, see Sections 7.2.2 and 7.3 of the Calendar or contact the Examination Services Unit by email at examunit@athabascau.ca.

Students outside of Calgary or Edmonton must be supervised by an invigilator, a person authorized by Athabasca University to oversee the writing of an exam.

AU has established a network of approved exam invigilation centres across Canada.

If you are studying outside of Canada or are located more than 100km from any of our exam invigilation centres, you must arrange for an invigilator that meets our invigilator guidelines and is pre-approved by the Office of the Registrar.

The invigilator may be a full-time professor (at accredited post-secondary institution) or appropriate designate such as a high school teacher or librarian. The invigilator cannot be a relative, friend, neighbor, co-worker, supervisor, another Athabasca University student, or a person living at the same address as the student taking the exam.

In general, exams are included in the cost of your course, with the following exceptions:

Many exam invigilators will charge a fee to invigilate student exams. Students may also be required to pay invigilation fees to the institution providing invigilation for their exam.

AU does not charge fees to invigilate exams scheduled during regular business hours at any of its three locations; however, some universities, colleges, and other institutions do charge an "external student" fee to supervise exams. Students are responsible for any expenses they incur for exam invigilation service.

More information about examination fees can be found in Section 5.6 of the Calendar.

An invigilator is a person authorized by Athabasca University to oversee the writing of an examination by an AU student.

Students are required to write an exam with an established AU-approved invigilator or at an AU-approved invigilation centre if they live within 100 km of that invigilator or invigilation centre.

Students who live more than 100 km away from an examination centre may write their exams closer to home, provided they arrange for an invigilator.

More information on exam invigilation and guidelines for choosing an invigilator can be found on the Office of the Registrar’s Exam Invigilation Network webpage and in Section 7.4 of the Calendar.
