Veronica Thompson, Chair (Assistant Professor English)
Professor Thompson coordinates a number of English courses including English 211, English 302, and English 307. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Queensland in Australia and has taught at Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary. Her research and teaching interests are: women's literature, Australian literature, Canadian literature, and post-colonial theory.

Dr. Jolene Armstrong, Assistant Professor English
Professor Armstrong coordinates a number of English courses including English 306, 335, 344, 345, 358, 451. She occasionally supervises student projects for English 491, 492, and 591. She completed her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at the University of Alberta where she taught in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and Department of English. Her research interests include postmodern literature, Canadian literature, women's writing and indigenous literature.

Veronica Baig, Academic Coordinator ESL
Professor Baig is responsible for the language skills courses (English 140, 143, 146, and 149), the integrated, advance level language courses (English 177 and 187), and the course, Developing Writing Skills (English 155).

David Brundage, Assistant Professor English
Coordinator of English 381 and challenge and seminar coordinator of English 255 (assisting Adien Dubbelboer), Dave has extensive background in writing. Since 2000 he has been developing online critical discussion groups; he is now helping to expand these from English 255 to other applications. Dave supervises a limited number of advanced-level creative writing projects through English 491, English 492, and Communications 450.

Corey Coates, Assistant Professor English
Professor Coates coordinates English 305, 324, 325, 395, 397, and 437. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and his research interests include nineteenth- and twentieth-century British, Canadian, and colonial/postcolonial literature.

Michael Dabrowski, Assistant Professor, Spanish
Professor Dabrowski coordinates the Spanish program including Spanish 200, 201, 300, and 301. He is currently working on developing additional courses for Spanish. He has over 15 years of teaching experience at various colleges and universities in western Canada.

Adien Dubbelboer, Academic Coordinator-Effective Writing
Professor Dubbelboer coordinates English 255 and is involved in all aspects of the effective writing program including the online discussion groups. She has an M.A. in English from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands.

Dr. Manijeh Mannani, Assistant Professor, English and Comparative Literature
Professor Mannani coordinates English 212, 316, 335, 336, 423, and 492. She has a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta. Her research and teaching interests include Comparative Literature, Poetry, Autobiography, Iranian Studies, and Aspects of Theory.

Dr. Mark A. McCutcheon, Assistant Professor, English
Professor McCutcheon co-ordinates English 303 and 304, as well as English 633 for the MAIS program. He holds a Ph.D. in Literary and Theatre Studies from the University of Guelph, and has taught literary, media, and cultural studies at universities in Canada and Germany. His teaching and research interests are in postcolonial studies (especially Canadian and Black Atlantic topics), new media and techno-culture, performance studies, Romantic literature, popular culture, and adaptation studies.

Anne Nothof, Professor English
Professor Nothof has developed undergraduate English courses in genre, drama, women's literature, post-colonial literature, and a graduate course in post-colonial drama for the Master of Arts, Integrated Studies program (MAIS). She has published essays on British and Canadian playwrights, and a collection of essays on playwright, Sharon Pollock. She is past president of the Association for Canadian Theatre Research, and a board member and editor at NeWest Press, for which she has edited playtexts and novels by Alberta authors. She is also the editor for the Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia ( www.canadiantheatre.com ).

Audrey O'Brien, Academic Coordinator French
Professor O'Brien coordinates a number of French courses as well as developing the French program. In the past she has taught French language and literature at Grant MacEwan College, Concordia University College and the University of Alberta. Her research and teaching interests are: contemporary francophone literature, criticism, second language teaching strategies and the application of digital technology for learning languages.

Joseph J. Pivato, Professor English
As a coordinator in English, Professor Pivato has developed courses in Comparative Literature, literary theory and ethnic minority writing. He teaches the graduate course, English 551: Comparative Canadian Literature, in the MAIS program. See also the courses on Film and Literature and Literature and Hypertext. He has published books on ethnic minority writing and has lectured on this subject in Europe, Australia, U.S.A., and Canada.

Vina Tirven-Gadum, Assistant Professor French
Professor Tirven is in charge of a number of French courses. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba where she also taught before coming to Athabasca University. Her research interests are: the modern French novel, poetry, literary style, literary fraud, translation studies and the application of technology to language teaching and learning.

Kathy Williams, Academic Coordinator Modern Languages
Professor Williams coordinates the German courses as well as Art History and English. Her interests include contemporary German literature, children's literature, Canadian literature, and the use of new media in foreign language instruction.
