Athabasca University’s Master of Distance Education (MDE) program is one of the most reputable graduate programs in distance education.

Offered by Athabasca University's Centre for Distance Education, the program was established in September 1994. Its primary focus is on the fields of distance education and training— learning that helps students overcome the barriers of time and space.

The Centre is pleased to announce its doctoral program (EdD) in Distance Education. The program, the first of its kind in North America, began August 2008. For more information, please review the Doctor of Education (EdD) in Distance Education website.

The Master of Distance Education Program Regulations

Student enrolling into the MDE    program as of September 1, 2007.

Students enrolled in the MDE    program before September 1, 2007.

The Centre for Distance Education would like to announce program regulation changes to the Master of Distance Education (MDE) program.

The MDE program has changed its credit requirements from 14 courses and/or thesis or project sections (42 credits) to 11 courses and/or thesis or project sections (33 credits).

We added one more required (core) course to the list, changing the core from five courses to six courses. The additional core course must be a course on technology, either selected from a list of MDE technology courses or approved as transfer credit towards meeting this requirement.

Changes also include the requirements for students pursuing the thesis/project route. In general, we are adding more course content to the thesis/project credit structure. The requirements will still be 12 credits but the requirements will be different within those 12 credits (MDDE 696, 697, 698, and 699 to MDDE 701, 702, 703, and 704). MDDE 701 will become a three-credit Advanced Research Methods course, and MDDE 702 will be Research Proposal Writing (a revision of the current MDDE 696).

Lastly, we are reducing the maximum allowable time to graduate from seven years to six years.

Student enrolling into the MDE program as of September 1, 2007.

Students accepted for admission into the MDE program as of September 1, 2007, will follow the 33-credit program regulations.

Students enrolled in the MDE program before September 1, 2007.

Students who were enrolled in the MDE program before September 1, 2007 have the option of graduating under the 42-credit MDE program regulations or the 33-credit MDE program regulations.

Current MDE program students must declare in writing to the Centre for Distance Education e-mail as to which program regulations they will be following, along with chosen program route (course-based, thesis, or project).

To the complete 42-credit MDE   program regulations.
