Athabasca University professor honoured by the Canadian Nurses Association

Dr. Pamela Hawranik, Dean, Graduate Studies has been awarded a Centennial Award by the Canadian Nurses Association. Dr. Hawranik was one of 100 nurses from across the country to receive the award in a ceremony in Ottawa on November 26. The event was part of the CNA's year-long program of activities marking its 100th anniversary.

"I am humbled, thrilled and honoured to have received this award. There are so many nurses who deserve to be honoured in this way." said Dr. Hawranik. "I hope I will be able to continue to try to assist in improving the life of others directly and indirectly through the various boards and groups I am involved in, by my research, and by mentoring students."

The Centennial Awards were created to honour exceptional registered nurses whose work has had a positive impact on nursing and on the lives and health of Canadians.

"These are nurses who represent all regions of the country and all areas of nursing, from educators to administrators to practitioners to researchers to policy leaders." Said CNA president Kaaren Neufeld, "But although they may work in a variety of settings, one thing they have in common is that they have made a difference. Their passion and dedication is truly inspiring."

Dr. Hawranik joined Athabasca University in June, 2008 as the university's first Dean for Graduate Studies. Prior to that, she served as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba. Her primary research is in the area of gerontology with a particular emphasis on the effectiveness of community services in meeting the needs of older adults and their unpaid caregivers.
