November 07, 2008
Athabasca University is pleased to announce its recent acquisition of the collection of Dr. Manoly Lupul. The collection consists of more than 1300 volumes compiled during his long and distinguished career as an academic and historian in the province. The volumes concentrate on education in western Canada with a particular emphasis on education within ethnic cultures.
Dr. Lupul is a founder and the first director of the Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) at the University of Alberta. Under his leadership, the Institute grew to become internationally recognized as an important centre for the study of Ukrainian culture. A major portion of the collection acquired by Athabasca University focuses on Ukrainian studies.
Dr. Lupul was named to the Order of Canada for his work on Ukrainian culture in Canada and his contributions to the development of the country’s multi-cultural policies.
"The collection is an important one for AU primarily because of Dr. Lupul's work as the founding director of CIUS," says Steve Schafer, Director of Library Services. " Being at the geographic center of Ukrainian settlement in Alberta makes it even more important for us as a university."
Schafer says the university is in the process of assessing and cataloguing the collection with a view to adding to it in the future.
