Athabasca University is pleased to announce The Importance of Being Monogamous by Sarah Carter has been named to the long list for the Cundill International Prize in History. The book is a co-publication of Athabasca University Press and the University of Alberta Press.
The prize, established at McGill University by internationally-renowned investment manager Peter Cundill, is the world’s largest for historical non-fiction literature. The winner, to be announced on November 25, will receive the Canadian equivalent of $75,000 USD. Two other books will receive “Recognition of Excellence” awards worth $10,000 USD.
The long list of 15 books was chosen from 171 entries representing 75 publishing houses worldwide. The Importance of Being Monogamous is the only title dealing with a Canadian subject.
“I would say it’s stunningly amazing that a press like ours can make a list for an international prize as big and prestigious as this one,” said Walter Hildebrandt, Director of Athabasca University Press. “To be on the same list with the likes of Yale, Harvard and Oxford is really quite gratifying and speaks well to the importance of Sarah’s book.”
Sarah Carter is the H.M. Tory Chair and Professor in the Department of History and Classics, and the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. She is the author of several books, including Aboriginal People and Colonizers of Western Canada to 1900, capturing Women, and Lost Harvests.
The Importance of Being Monogamous is the first book published by Athabasca University’s new AU Press, Canada’s only open-access scholarly press. All AU Press electronic publications are available free on the internet at http://www.aupress.ca.
