Kinshuk receives research fellowship in Japan

September 11, 2008

Dr. Kinshuk, director of AU’s School of Computing and Information Systems, has received a prestigious research fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science through its Invitation Fellowship Program for short-term research in Japan.

“These fellowships are highly competitive with a very low acceptance rate and are aimed to promote international co-operation and mutual understanding through scientific research,” Kinshuk said. He was in Japan from July 21 to August 10 conducting research and lecturing on adaptivity and personalization in e-learning.

At Tokyo Denki University, Kinshuk presented the lecture “Adaptivity and Personalization in Mobile Learning.” “I looked at research in mobile learning,” he said, “with particular focus on adaptivity for individual learners. Various aspects of the research exploit the benefits of location, context, device and learner modeling. When combined with mobile technology, we can achieve personalized delivery of multimedia-rich learning objects, collaborative problem-solving in the context of learners\' surroundings, authentic problem-solving through multiple forms of input and appropriate use of these different media formats as part of problem-solving for rich learning experiences.”

At Hitachi Software, Kinshuk presented “Adaptivity and Personalization in Learning Systems through Cognitive Modelling.” “Various cognitive capabilities of learners can be identified through pattern detection in learners’ interaction in the learning environment,” he said. “Such an approach could contribute to automatic customization of learning activities during the learning process to achieve an optimal learning experience for each individual.”

Kinshuk also visited various universities and industries for discussions on academic research and possibilities for collaboration. He met with Dr. Tadao Ichikawa, founding chair of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Technical Committee on Multimedia Computing (TCMC), to discuss collaboration issues between TCMC and the IEEE Technical Committee on Learning Technologies that Kinshuk founded a few years ago.

“The IEEE is the most important international professional organization for activities related to electronics, computing curriculum, standards, research and practice,” Kinshuk said. “The TCMC is the primary forum for professionals working on all aspects of hardware and software systems that integrate a variety of different types of information such as audio and video in local, networked and mobile computing systems.”
