Thérèse Laferrière : April 28, 2008
8:30am - 9:45am

Photo of Thérèse Laferrière.Thérèse Laferrière is a professor at Université Laval. She designs and studies network based learning environments. She studies the phenomena that take place in class, and the educational community at large. Thérèse studies these things through the lenses of group psychology and a socio-constructivist perspective on the cognitive sciences.

In her own teaching, she integrates networking education technology in order to enrich the learning experience for the students. She also organizes communal knowledge groups. There have been more than forty (40) students who have completed a bachelor’s, master’s degree or a doctorate under her direction. Her writings and speeches show her concern and care for professional training. She is an associate researcher at the Centre Francophone d’Informatisation des Organisations (CEFRIO) or Francophone Centre for the Computerization of Organizations where she co-directs the remote school network project. She was also responsible for training of teaching personnel within the Online/TV Learning research program funded by the Canadian Centers for Excellence from 1995 to 2002. She is presently the coordinator of the technology and masters training study group for the Association for Masters within the SCEE.

Stephen Heppell : April 30, 2008

Photo of Stephen Heppel.Stephen spent almost a quarter of a century building Ultralab, which established an exceptional, unique reputation as a world-leading learning technology research centre. He has been a professor for 18 years, is an emeritus prof at Anglia Ruskin and a visiting professor at Bournemouth University, and is currently an external examiner at the OU.

As an advisor to a string of nations from the Cayman Isles to UK, Stephen continues to be influential in government ICT policy making on a global scale. He is an active leader on several committees and has a long list of TV appearances around the world. Stephen writes regularly for the popular press and has written many chapters in books and journals.

Outside of the classroom, Stpehen delves into his passion for sailboat racing. He writes and advises on the pedagogy of high level sports coaching and has served as coach to UK World Championship squads.

Stephen’s chair in Information Technology in the Learning Environment at APU was partly supported by Apple Computers from 1986 - 2005 and, in a rather exciting way, along with Harrison Ford, Mohammed Ali, Jarvis Cocker, Damion Hirst and other cool dudes Stephen is honoured to be an "Apple Master".
